Life - A Gift from God

This excerpt from 'Creation' magazine Vol.29 No. 3 June 2007 By M Piercy, M.B.,B.S., F.A.N.Z.C.A., a specialist anaesthetist.
'I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly, I will not give a woman an abortive remedy.' The Hippocratic Oath. (As translated by Ludwig Edelstein)
These words, penned approximately four centuries before Christ, still hold immense relevance today. Their writer was Hippocrates, a philosopher and physician of Ancient Greece who is often considered to be 'the father of medicine'. Hippocrates' 'Oath' encapsulated the idea prevalent in Greek philosophy that suicide was a social evil akin to killing another person, but for the first time placed it in a code of practice for doctors.
Medical students in many western countries are still required to take the above 'Hippocratic oath'. The anti-abortion clause, however, at least in Australia, has been conveniently (and tragically) removed, a reflection of the secularization of our evolutionized culture.'

Glyconutrients are essential for optimal health and wellbeing. Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster produced their glyconutrient products giving cell-to-cell communication needed for continued enhanced healthy life and longevity. Glyconutrients regulate and monitor the balance of normal cell function .

Amazing Magnet Therapy

Extract from 'How To Get Rid of Arthritis and Rheumatism' by J. Crousset & R Dehin.
'There have been magnet bracelets, bangles and necklaces, magnetic underlays on beds etc. around for years. Yet many people would not know much about this therapy as doctors don't usually recommend it.
The technique consists of treating various health problems by applying small magnets on the skin.
Magnetic therapy is effective because magnetic fields influence living organisms and are completely natural phenomena that play an important role in the functioning of our biological systems. According to Dr. Orengo,(a French orthopaedic surgeon), without magnetic fields, life as we know it would cease to exist.
Magnetic fields created by small therapeutic magnets provide beneficial results because they increase blood flow in areas needing treatment, which in turn provides cells with more oxygen.
They also trigger a series of biological changes that can affect the migration of calcium ions; excess acidity (by balancing H levels in the body); endocrine functions (magnetic fields either increase or decrease glandular activity); enzyme activity and other biochemical processes.'

Mannatech Inc with founder Sam Caster, have produced glyconutrients, or plant-based "health sugars", a key factor in Mannatech products. Glyconutrients support your body's natural ability to reach optimum nutritional levels and play a role in enhancing quality of life. Glyconutrients are necessary in every cell of your body.

Eat Less for Long Life

Recently on television I saw an elderly gentlemen advocating long life by eating less; 'sub-nutrition without malnutrition'.
Again in 'The Keys to Extraordinary Longevity' Dr. J. P Willem recalls the story from 'regimen for long life' recommended by Roy Walford, of a venerable Venetian in the 15th century, who at the age of 37 imposed on himself a Spartan diet after leading a dissolute and gluttonous life. It is said he lived to be 103!
The method Mr Walford tried on himself has proved its worth according to Richard Weindruch. It consists in 'sub-nutrition without malnutrition', based on knowledge and the scientific logic necessary to avoid errors. In the adult a reasonable low calorie diet could correspond to a 'daily intake of 1 gram of protein and half a gram of lipids per kilogram of body weight, adjusting the quantity of complex glucides to the desired global number or calories'.
Centenarians throughout the world planet restrict their diet, subjecting their bodies to acidosis - so protecting themselves from cancer, heart attack and infection. From day to day it can be seen that eating less improves the quality of life.'
Eating less and supplementing with glyconutrients is certainly a great suggestion. Mannatech Inc with Sam Caster the founder, is the world leader in glyconutrients which are necessary for optimal health and well being. Glyconutrient supplements supplied by Mannatech for adults and children that address health and wellness issues, weight management and skin care.

Famous 'Chimney Rock' Eroding

Interesting tit bit from 'Creation' magazine Vol 20 No. 1- PHYSORG.COM, news 72360582.html>, 18/9/2006.
'Evolutionary notions that the earth has been shaped by slow-and-gradual processes over millions of years have conditioned the way people look at the world.
For example, many view familiar rock features as being stable and unchanging - even 'permanent' in the sense of human timeframes. So evidence to the contrary e.g. the recent collapse of one of Australia's 'Twelve Apostles' surprises many.
Nebraska's Chimney Rock is a long-familiar 'icon' used to adorn decorative spoons, license plates, and now that State's commemorative 25-cent coin. But to the surprise of many it's eroding away. According to the Nebraska State Historical Society the Chimney Rock 'spire', currently about 36 metres (120 ft) high, has lost about nine metres (30 ft) in the past 150 years - more evidence that millions of years are not necessary.'

The essential saccharides (glyconutrients) were actually discovered by a doctor over a hundred years ago. We weren't able to enjoy these glyconutrient supplement until recently when Sam Caster and Mannatech's scientists produced their products. Glyconutrients give cell-to-cell communication and are necessary in our body but are mostly missing from our diet.

Babies at Risk-Toxic Chemical

There seems to be a problem with our cooking utensils. A few of years ago we heard rumblings about non-stick cookware (frying pays etc.) giving us cancer. Last year I ventured to buy new cookware. After going to a reputable store and asking about the chemicals in the non-stick pans I was told by an indignant sales person that all their cookware was of the best quality and that I would have no problems.
Well, here again reading in the Sun Herald 9th September "Babies at risk from Non-stick chemical" by Daniel Dasey.
The ANTI-TOXIC chemical campaigners are on the war path with good reason. They are calling for non-stick frying pans to be taken off the market because a study has found that a chemical used in their manufacture is harmful to humans.
'US researchers analysed blood in the umbilical cords of newborn babies and found those with increased levels of the chemical were likely to be smaller with reduced head sizes.'
'Dr Mariann Lloyd-Smith, of the National Toxic Networks Australia, said the study was the latest showing a link between ill-health and the chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), used in non-stick frying pans and barbecues.' Just as well I stuck with the stainless steel variety of pans.

The future is still unsure for non-stick frying pans however we can be sure that the future of Glyconutrients and Mannatech Inc. will continue with cutting-edge scientists providing information on nutritional saccharides- glyconutrients- that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech's U.S. products. Early research on glyconutrients (the necessary sugars) suggests that by adding glyconutrients to the human diet there is an increase in production in one's bone marrow stem cell production.

Problems in the Waterways

Taken from Pharmaceuticals in Our Water Supply Are Causing Bizarre Mutations to Wildlife - By Greg Peterson, E Magazine - 9 August 2007
'.....From intersex fish in the Potomac River to frog mutations in Wisconsin, federal officials are studying the effects of pharmaceuticals such as pain killers and depression medicine in our water supply......
A 1999 (EPA and German) study of pharmaceutical and other personal-care products concluded the "undetectable effects on aquatic organisms are particularly worrisome because effects could accumulate so slowly that major change goes undetected until the cumulative level of these effects finally cascades to irreversible change - change that would otherwise be attributed to natural adaptation or ecologic succession."
Meanwhile, federal officials continue to study the human health effects of the pharmaceutical compounds found in water known as endocrine disruptors, including possible links to neurological problems in children and increased incidence of some cancers. Federal officials are investigating a wide range of fish health problems in Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. Several studies of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers have revealed inter-sex fish, a wide range of "abnormalities in which both male and female characteristics are present within the same fish."
The abnormalities include nine male smallmouth bass from the Potomac River near Sharpsburg, Maryland (about 60 miles upstream from Washington) that developed female eggs inside their sex organs. Inter-sex bass were also found in a study three years earlier, after fish kills about 170 miles upstream in the South Branch of the Potomac in Hardy County, West Virginia......'

This disaster comes on the back of information that even the Arctic and Antartic Poles are not exempt for pollution. We as humans can do our little bit for the environment and also ourselves by taking glyconutrients - saccharides - produced by Sam Caster and Mannatech Inc. giving optimal health and wellness through their glyconutrient supplements.

Living Life to 120 Years!

Point of interest from 'The Miracle in Aloe Vera' by Dr. Neecie Moore.
There has been much talk about human beings living much longer and hopefully in better health than our ancestors. Dr. Moore gives us a very welcoming article in her book.
'As Danhof has pointed out (1991), many scientists now believe that a homan life of some 120 years is not an unreasonable possibility. Death occurs at a much younger age because aging is "accelerated" by processes in the body and by external influences. Among the theories posed for internal processes that accelerate aging is that free radical generation associated with metabolic processes are most likely responsible for aging changes. This internal aging may be aggravated by exposure to actinic radiation (photo-aging). The skin in particular shows changes due to aging, becoming thinner, wrinkled, and less supple.'
'One of the naturally occurring agents which has shown the potential to retard skin aging is Aloe. Says Danof, "The amount of collagen in the skin can be measured by the presence of a marker substance, hydroxyproline. When oil-in-water (O/W) extracts were applied to guinea pig skin for six to sixteen weeks....the soluble collagen level, as denoted by the increase in hydroxyproline, was significantly increased - a remarkable potential anti-aging effect. Similar water-in (W/O) Aloe extracts were far less effective" (Danhof, 1991,245).'

For consumers looking to live healthier and nutritionally enriched lives, Sam Caster CEO of Mannatech Inc. both offer hope. Based in Coppell, Texas, Mannatech Inc. sells more than 24 proprietary and scientifically validated glyconutrient supplements and products for adults and children that address health and wellness issues, weight management and skin care.

Insects Invented Insecticides!

Taken from Densey Clyne's natural perspective in Burke's Backyard 2001
'We're a clever lot, we humans....our inventions have grown in complexity from stone-age tools to today's high-tech computer hardware. But many of the things we think we invented, the insects thought of first....These are just a few inventions.
Papermaking - A small rather aggressive wasp called Polistes is common, though not often welcome, around our gardens. She not only finds nutrients, but uses the simplest of materials and techniques to make a set of paper cells. Fragments of wood scraped off a dead stick are mixed with saliva in her mouth, then the resulting chewed pulp is applied to form a nest that is firm but flexible, shaped rather like an inverted wineglass. That is papermakeing in its simplest form, and not so different from what happens in our industrial paper mills!
Believe it or not insects invented insecticides!
When disturbed the caterpillar of our familiar orchard butterfly and its relatives evert an organ from their heads that diffuses a chemical repellent. It's uses against the tiny parasitic wasps and flies that attack them. Soldiers of the termite called Nasutitermes ("nosy termite') reper attacking ants positively, spraying a noxious chemical in their direction from the hollow, pointed 'nose' that gives them their name. Another sharp shooter against all manner of enemies is the bombardier beetle that accurately fires a visible cloud of poisonous vapour from its anus. You can hear the 'pop'!'

The newest product from Mannatech Inc. is PhytoMatrix which uses a patented hydroponic cultivation technology which makes it possible for plants to absorb for great quantities of naturally sourced minerals. PhytoMatrix provides superior delivery of essential vitamin and minerals plus important phytochemicals.

Kamikaze Ichthyosaur?

Taken from 'Creation' Magazine Vol 27 'Kamikaze Ichthyosaur?' by Drs. Tas Walker B.Sc.(Hons) [geology], B.Eng.(Hons.),Ph.D. and Carl Wieland,M.C., B.S. No. 4 2005
The complete preserved skull of an ichthyosaur was found buried in a vertical, nose-down position at 90 degrees to the rock layers. Unlike most fossils, the head was preserved in three dimensions, and had not been flattened by the weight of sediment above it.
Geologists found the fossil in 1999, in an abandoned quarry in the north of Switzerland, near Hauenstein, and took months to prise it carefully out of the enclosing rock.
The specimen is 37cm (15in) long, and consists of the head, its long snout with some 200 fine teeth, a few neck vertebrae and a very small part of its rib cage. It was a young animal, which would have been about two metres long, of the species Leptonectes tenuirostris, and is now displayed at the nearby Natural History Museum of Olten.
The skull was enclosed vertically within three geological layers, which have been dated according to long-age beliefs, by reference to the fossils they contain. Curiously, the layers span an 'age' of about one million years, and that presents something of a problem for long-age geologists.
How could anyone conceive of an ichthyosaur head being buried in a vertical position slowly over a million years, yet remaining preserved along its whole length?
The obvious implication is that the 'millions of years' are fanciful.

Mannatech are leaders of glyconutrition and in their supplements glyconutrient technology uses plant extracts to enhance cell-to-cell communication and overall physical health. It's a revolution akin to the invention of the personal computer or the digital video disc, Mannatech Inc. claims.

Thoughts on Glyconutrients

Information from "The Missing Nutrients' by Dr. Steve Nugent.
'The human body will correct itself, but only if it has the tools to do the job it was designed to do.' 'Glyconutrients are the only known nutrients required for the correct structure and function of all cells in all biological systems.'
'Glyconutrients are unique because they are needed for vitually every cell of the body and, although they are not medicines, without them the body cannot perform the functions it was designed to perform. Hundreds of benefits have already been documented, addressing everything from stress to cancer.

Some Thoughts on Glyconutrients.
- During the early 20th century, carbohydrates were thought to be compounds used to provide energy without any other functions.
- In the first years of the 21st century, we now know that necessary carbohydrates inthe form of glyconutrients are vital for correct structure, function, relationships of cells, membranes, messenger molecules, enzymes, antibodies, hormones, binding, signalling, tumor spread, and all other biological systems.
- Modern diets are deficient in glyconutrients, as well as other nutrients. We need 8 but typically get 2.
- Glucose conversion does not work all the time in everyone.
- Growing evidence of the value of glyconutrients has been documented in human, animal and cell biology studies.
- Even congenital defects of glycosylation have shown improvement with glyconutritients.
- Many diseases related to abnormal glycobiology go unrecognised.
- Research shows every disease tested thus far can be sugar printed.
- What we have learned so far is only the tip of a very large iceberg.'

Salt of the Earth

Item from 'Unique' Natural Health & Beauty News
'From the remote regions of the Himalayan mountain range in Pakistan, comes a salt that is not only high in trace minerals - 84 to be exact - but is actually good for the body. This salt was formed when the massive range was thrust upwards from the ancient ocean due to seismic pressure. The minerals found in this salt are the exact same trace minerals needed by the body to maintain good health and vitality.
For the last few decades salt has earned the reputation as one of the 'baddies' in the diet. And to some extent this may be deserved. Most common salt is chemically refined and most of the natural minerals are removed as impurities - to leave just sodium chloride. It is this process that has given salt its unhealthy status and consuming this as table salt may result in a variety of conditions. This is why doctors have been advocating avoiding salt.
Called Crystal Salt because of it's unique crystalline formations, it is 'sea salt', but in a much more pure form. Unlike today's refined and processed sea salts which contain many of the pollutants that make their way into the oceans, this salt really is the salt of the earth.'
This unrefined pure Himalayan crystal salt is hand mined from the region of Kalabagh and is available as table, cooking salt, or sole (therapeutic salt brine) and bath salts.

There has been talk that because of various reasons we have been using refined sea salt thereby iodised and not getting enough iron in our diet. Mannatech Inc. products are at the cutting edge of nutritional science and these glyconutritionals are essential for optimal health and well-being and are generally missing in our diets.

Agile Humpback Whale Flipper Design

Aircraft designers take not in article "Flighty Flippers" in 'Creation' magazinen Vol, 27 No. 2 by Jonathan Sarfati.

'Ever seen the bumps on the front of a humpback whale's flipper? What sort of designer would design such a thing, rather than a smooth, sleek flipper?'

'Engineers and US Naval Academy scientists have inadvertently answered that question: an incredibly ingenious designer - one whom aircraft designers can learn much from!'

'They used scale models of a flipper 56 cm (22") long. One was smooth, and the other had the little bumps, called tubercles. In a wind tunnel, the smooth one behaved like a typical aeroplane wing. But the one with the tubercles had 8% better lift and an astounding 32% less drag. It also resisted stalling at a 40% steeper wing angle.

If that could be applied to aeroplanes, the better lift would make takeoff and landing easier; and lower drag would mean less fuel would be wasted; and the better stall resistance would be a huge safety advantage. The researchers propose that the tubercle design would also greatly benefit propellers, helicopter rotors and ship rudders............ '

Mannatech Inc scientists discovered glyconutrients which are necessary sugars missing from our diet. What a difference would be made to our health systems, hospital waiting lists, doctor and nursing shortages if glyconutrition was to be used universally around the world. Mannatech Inc. products are released in many countries and scientists have recently discovered that lack of these invaluable sugars in our diet is a major reason for most of today's diseases.

Our Body's First Priority is Keeping You Alive!

Excerpt from "The Missing Nutrients" by Dr. Steve Nugent.

Dr. Nugent is an internationally known expert in the therapeutic use of dietary supplements and a leading researcher in the connections between environmental toxins and diseases. He had one of the most successful complementary medicine practices in North America where patients came to see him from around the world and tested more than 6,000 dietary supplements. He now works with, teachers and lectures around the world about glyconutrition.

'For more than ten years, I've seen individuals with fibromyalgia who experienced a quality of life enhancement in a matter of days. I've also seen some cases where it took months before they experienced the same level of enhancements. I strongly suspect in those cases that something more serious was going on in their bodies than they were aware of or could not be diagnosed. You could create that same theoretical scenario with virtually any type of illness.

So, how long should it take to see results? Many people still take glyconutrients for the first few days and have tremendous and seemingly miraculous results. Many will not. This is because we are each biochemically and genetically unique. Glyconutrients are food, not drugs, and we cannot predict the time as you would with drugs.......' says Dr. Nugent.

GlycoScience is designed to provide information on nutritional saccharides - glyconutritionals -that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech's Inc US product line to US Professionals to learn more about safety and effectiveness of nutritional supplements for patients.

Fluttering Among the Dinosaurs

Found article in Creation Magazine Vol. 16 No. 4 - New Scientist, 27 March 2004, p.17.

'Ancient butterflies 'exquisitely preserved' in amber dated at 15 - 25 million years old are forcing a rethink of their [supposed] evolutionary origins.

'It was just incredible,' said one research. 'It's no different than if you took a modern-day butterfly and put it under a light microscope.'

It had been thought that butterflies first evolved about 40 or 50 million years ago, after the dinosaurs had died out. But because the butterflies in ancient amber are just like today's butterflies, researchers propose that 'primitive butterflies' must have arisen much earlier than previously thought, perhaps fluttering among the dinosaurs more than 65 million tears ago.

Such 'living fossils' pose a conundrum for evolutionists - why no change?
Amber fossils likely date from the Flood, about 4,500 years ago.

Founded in 1994, Mannatech Incorporated is a US publicly traded global wellness solutions company headquartered in Coppell, Texas. As a pioneer and world leader in the field of Glyconutrients, Mannatech occupies a unique niche in the dynamic field of carbohydrate technology. This technology was actually discovered 103 years ago but the higher authorities dismissed it and the discoverer as 'mad'.

Dr Assisting Glyconutrient Research

The Real Story that ABC’s 20/20 Investigators Missed
ABC’s 20/20 story on Mannatech – Why did ABC not finish their investigation on Mannatech?
By Mark Johnson, June 2, 2007

'Why didn't ABC mention that Mannatech was invited to attend MIT's 2004 Emerging
Technology Conference where Mannatech was selected (the only nutrition company attending) out of over 100 applicants, for presenting new and disruptive technologies to investors. And at that event, Dr. Robert K. Murray who co-authored Harper's Biochemistry Medical Textbook, attended Mannatech's booth to answer investor's questions about glyconutritional technology!

If ABC were so accurate in reporting, surely they wouldn't have missed the fact that
rheumatologist, Dr. John Axford of the Royal Society of Medicine and a renowned author of several medical textbooks as well as a leading researcher on Rheumatoid Arthritis, joined the board of directors of Mannatech. Dr. Axford is helping with glyconutrient research being conducted simultaneously both at Mannatech and at the Royal Society of Medicine'.

Mannatech filmed the interview between the ABC reporter and CEO Sam Caster. To see
the full 4-part interview, go to: http://www.youtube.com/ and enter “Mannatech” in the search box.

Life-giving Energy to Cells

This article is very interesting news which I have not seen before.

Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring substance present within every cell in the body. Without it, humans would die. Its main function is to generate life-giving energy to cells.

Both clinical and experimental studies have shown that a number of diseases cause CoQ10 to fluctuate significantly and that the level of CoQ10 in cells is extremely dependent on diet.

Many foods contain CoQ10 — especially meats. But because so many people (especially the elderly) are lacking in vitamins and minerals, CoQ10 deficiency is very common.

Extreme stress or disease can also make this vital nutrient fall to dangerously low levels in the body. Many studies have also shown that a wide array of prescription medications can lower CoQ10 levels.

Mannatech Inc. are leaders in the glyconutrient industry and their vitamin and mineral products contain this essential enzyme Coq10 optimal giving health and wellness globally.

The Stone Age?

A figment of the Imagination? Taken from Creation Vol 27 No. 4 By Robert Niemand

Ever wonder where the term 'Stone Age' came from? It is everywhere the supposed 'fact' that prehistoric humans used stone tools for over two million years before they learned how to find and use metal. Then they began using bronze, and iron only came late. But the evidence from archaeology is not as clear-cut as you might think. Christian Thompson, the man who invented the 'three-age' system - the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age - was actually a coin collector who was appointed the first head of the Danish National Museum, despite being largely untrained.

His job was to find a classification system that would bring some order to the jumbled human artifacts (tools, weapons, ornaments and so on) piled around the museum. His successor at the museum, an archaeologist named J.J.A. Worsaae, went looking for evidence of this sequence at dig sites around Europe - beginning with an excavation of burial sites in Ireland, where he found lots of stone, brass and iron tools.

It is commonly claimed that Worsaae found these artefacts in the tree layers proposed by his predecessor,1 but in fact, if you check his work, he actually said that you can establish nothing from the tools he dug up directly from the peat moss, because in such a peat bog, the iron, bronze and stone tools are all mixed together. He also found tombs containing either bronze, stone or iron sets of tools. So why did he conclude that these burials occured in the three-age sequence? Because the sites with stone implements contained actual bodies, whereas the sites with bronze had only ashes, indication that the people practised cremation and thus were 'obviously' more advanced! Yet even this dubious argument is undermined by the fact that the people who had iron tools apparently went back to burying bodies.

Modern archaeologists now acknowledge that the Stone-Bronze-Iron Age system is not very helpful outside Europe. One wonders if it is valid anywhere. It appears to be mostly just another instance of dogma about 'human progress' that has been imposed on the evidence. While there has been a sequence to technological innovation, all the basics were well advanced long before Noah's Flood in the days of Tubal-cain, who 'forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron' (Genesis 4:22).

GlycoScience is another cutting-edge innovation designed to provide information on nutritional saccharides - glyconutritionals- that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech's (TM) US product line to US Professionals to learn more about safety and effectiveness of nutritional supplements for patients.

Hunting Down Trans Fat

The truth is that trans fat hides out in all kinds of products. Trans fats are in obvious places like doughnuts and cookies, but also in not-so-obvious foods such as bean dips and bread. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked all food manufacturers to disclose the trans fat content of their foods on the Nutrition Facts label by 2006 - by which time most will have taken steps to minimise or take these fats out of their products. Other countries have no doubt taken steps of a similar nature. For now, you'll have to do a little detective work of your own to find them.

Look for the words hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil - code for trans fats - on labels. If partially hydrogenated oil is among the top three or four ingredients listed, you'll want to choose something else (the higher up an ingredient is, the more the product contains). But beware of a common trick: If a food, such as pie, has two or more components, the maker may list the low-fat one first (e.g. the filling followed by the fat-dense component (the crust). Read carefully.

Even after the new labels come out, some trans fats could sneak under your radar. The FDA allows any food with less than half a gram per serving to be called 'trans-fat free.' Half a gram might seem like nothing, but if it's a products you use a lot of - say, margarine - those half grams can add up quickly.

Glyconutrients are generally missing from our diet, however Mannatech's scientists have produced their supplements giving optimal health and wellbeing in humans.

Turmeric To the Rescue

Just been to the doctors with a very bad pain in the hip, only at night. Guess what the doc said? Probably bursitis!!

The day after I found this very interesting article in the Herbs For Health booklet.

If you have ever had tendinitis or bursitis, you know how stubborn it can be. Just when you think it's gone for good, the pain and inflammation return. Then you are back to taking paracetamol, ibuprofen or other painkillers. The problem is that regular use of these painkillers can lead to a whole hosts of health problems. For example, aspirin can cause ulcers and other gastric distress. Paracetamol can hurt your liver and kidneys. And steroidal painkillers can cause weight gain, hypertension, mood changes and joint damage.

Fortunately, there's a better way and it is right on the kitchen spice rack! It is turmeric, that yellow spice you add to rice when you want to give it colour. Turmeric does more than just add colour to a dish. Its active ingredient, curcumin, is a first-rate antioxidant and a powerful anti-inflammatory. In fact, laboratory studies prove that curcumin is effective a reducing in inflammation! And without the steroidal side effects!

You can add turmeric to your food, or take it in capsule form The suggested dosage is 400 milligrammes, three times a day. For best results, take it with bromelain capsules and flaxseed oil. You'll get better absorption and greater anti-inflammatory effects.

Many spices have glyconutrients in them. Mannatech products are at the cutting-edge of nutritional science and are necessary for optimal health.

The Hippocratic Oath

Taken from 'Creation' Magazine Vol. 29 No. 3 June-Aug 2007

'I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly, I will not give a woman an abortive remedy' The Hippocratic Oath, as translated by Ludwig Edelstein.

These words, penned approximately four centuries before Christ, still hold immense relevance today. Their writer was Hippocrates, a philosopher and physician of Ancient Greece who is often considered to be 'the father of medicine'. Hippocrates' 'Oath' encapsulated the idea prevalent ion Greek philosophy that suicide was a social evil akin to killing another human person, but for the first time placed it in a code of practice for doctors.

Medical students in many western countries are sill required to take the above 'Hippocratic oath'. The anti-abortion clause, however, at least in my country of Australia, has been conveniently ( and tragically) removed, a reflection of the secularization of our revolutionised culture. Modern medicine has all but abandoned the principle of the sanctity of human life that Hippocrates enunciated, and which is also found in the Genesis account of man being made in God's image. For example, today abortion is considered by many to be a 'pregnancy choice' rather than the destruction of another human being. Medical treatments are withdrawn from patients on the basis that they lack 'quality of life', rather than considering whether the treatment will help the person get better or preserve their life until the natural end.

The belief that we have evolved from simpler creatures if often used to justify the rejection of God as Creator.... Without God, life becomes purposeless...... The truth is that people have lost their sense of what it means to be human. Life, instead of being a precious gift, become evaluated according to its 'quality'. A person whilst Young, active and productive has a high 'quality of life', yet once this person becomes old, disabled or dependent, the quality is reduced, and his or her life may no longer be considered to be worth living or protecting......

The decline of respect for life in western culture is one more symptom of the tragic foundational shift away from biblical worldview to one based on evolutionary humanism.

Mannatech provide glyconutrients which are essential for health and wellbeing.

Men's Fitness Update

Found this 'The quick Fix' in a men's fitness magazine:

When you need a quick lunch or a healthful post-workout snack, a cold fruit smoothie seems like the perfect choice: high in protein, low in fat, rich in crucial vitamins and minerals, right?
Not necessarily. Depending on which ingredients you happen to choose, a smoothie can be a nutritional gold mine or the equivalent of french fries.

Choose a healthy foundation of nonfat dairy products and fruit," says Jo Ann Hattner, M.P.H., R.D., a clinical dietitian at Stanford University Medical Center. Nonfat milk and yogurt provide protein to build and repair hard-working muscles, while fresh and frozen fruit offer essential vitamins and minerals that help turn fat and carbs into fuel.

Athletic men need at least 0.75 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily, so getting extra protein is a good idea. Unfortunately, most chains don't include much protein in their boosts. Jamba Juice, one of the largest smoothie chains, adds a mere seven grams of protein per serving, so you may want to double up.

A nutrient deficiency can undermine performance, so gettiing a supplement with gthe recommended dietary allowance for all essential vitamins and minerals is a good idea.

Glyconutrients are generally missing from our diet but necessary for optimal health in humans.

How Your Health is Threatened

Pharmaceutical Pollution: What it is, and How Pharmaceutical Pollution Threatens Your Health-
by web site Six Wise.com

Americans are prescribed millions of doses of prescription drugs every year. Livestock are given millions more. But after the pill has been swallowed or the injection taken, the active components of the drugs do not become inert or completely absorbed by the body.

Far from disappearing, the drugs are excreted and now, scientists are finding, prescription drugs are showing up in our ground water, soil, waterways and even our drinking water. That's because our conventional sewage treatments may not be looking for drugs, and certainly don't always remove them. Adding to the problem are prescription drugs that aren't used, then are flushed down the toilet or deposited in landfills -- ultimately ending up in the environment.
This so-called "pharmaceutical pollution" could have major implications on wildlife, agriculture and humans -- yet is only beginning to be studied.
"This is an important new research area," said A. Lynn Roberts, leader of a Johns Hopkins team that began a study to determine the scope of pharmaceutical pollution in the United States. Roberts continued:
"Over the past few years, scientists in Europe have found pharmaceuticals in natural waterways, sewage treatment effluents and even in drinking water. Yet until this year [2003] there have been virtually no scientific studies examining this issue in the United States. ."

How Widespread is the Problem?
Current estimates are still being gathered, but a study conducted in 1999-2000 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) found that most waterways contain at least some antibiotics, steroids, synthetic hormones or other common drugs.

Just how many drugs are we using currently? A lot. Here are some statistics just for antibiotics (not including any other types of drugs):

· Humans consume 235 million doses of antibiotics each year.
· Livestock and poultry producers administered more than 21 million pounds of antibiotics to animals in 2004 alone.
When a drug is taken, experts say up to 90 percent may be excreted back into the environment, unchanged.

There is good news, and that is that attention to this issue is growing, and so is the drive to find out just what types of problems may be occurring.
The USGS agrees, stating in their report that "protecting the integrity of our water resources is one of the most essential environmental issues of the 21st century."

Discussion on Drugs

The World Today - Effectiveness of prescription drugs under dispute
Tuesday, 9 December , 2003 12:44:41
Reporter: Fran Kelly

TREVOR JONES: It is true to say that not everybody responds the same way to every medicine, in the same ways people have different allergies to foods and so on. But the vast majority of drugs work in certainly over 90 per cent of patients, but there are some categories where we don't know enough yet about the disease to know whether all the patients are going to get the benefit.FRAN KELLY: But according to Allen Roses, the statistics are startling. He says that more than 90 per cent of drugs only work in 30 to 50 per cent of the people taking them. Now, that's a massive failure rate.TREVOR JONES: Yes, I couldn't say that I would agree with him on that subject. I feel that all the data I've got, all the research I've seen is that that figure is different to the one I'm aware of.FRAN KELLY: What is the failure rate as far as you're aware of?TREVOR JONES: Well, for many drugs. I mean, for example, for painkillers they work in certainly well over 80 to 90 per cent of patients, and in those 10 per cent they don't work as well, it doesn't mean they don't work, it means you maybe have to take two tablets rather than one.FRAN KELLY: But the reality is the National Health Service, the NHS drug bill is 7.2 billion pounds a year and rising for drugs that, according to Allen Roses – the Vice President of Genetics with GlaxoSmithKline, don't work on most of the people who take them.TREVOR JONE: Well, let's put that in context again. The drugs bill is a very small component of overall spend on heath here, in fact it's only just over 10 per cent.FRAN KELLY: But it has risen, according to the newspaper – 50 per cent and…TREVOR JONES: It has risen much less than the total spend on national health service.FRAN KELLY: In Australia, and I presume it's the same here, the drug companies do work hard on doctors, particularly to prescribe their drugs.TREVOR JONES: Well, we most certainly believe that the doctor can distinguish between what patients need and what patients must have, and what we do is provide the kind of information to them, both in post-graduate seminars, and of course by representative visits, so they can make their own judgement, patient-by-patient of what's the right drug for that person.

Chondroitin sulfate Pharmaceutical Grade, is a component of bovine cartilage, and may make fluid of joints more slippery, and help protect cartilage from breaking down. Recent studies verified beneficial effects.Astragalus may strengthen immune response, increase production of white blood cells, fight infection, and may be energizing.Cordyceps, Reishi & Shiitake mushroom extracts contain a number of active agents that are known to modulate function of the immune system in humans. The primary agents include specific polysaccharides - which occur in the form of Beta-D-glucans bound to amino acids, which are known to possess anti cancer properties.Fucoidan consists of glycoproteins and glyconutrients from a super low molecular weight extract of brown seaweed or Limu harvested from pure ocean water. Along with natural sea minerals and other nutrients, fucoidan is made up of fucose, mannose, galactose, and xylose. Fucoidan may help immune function; increase macrophage, T-cell and killer cell activity; inhibit tumor cell growth; normalize blood pressure; and increase resistance to viruses. It may inhibit specific blood clotting factors that can lead to excessive clotting, and it may lower heavy metals, radioactives, cholesterol, and blood sugar due to its alginate content. Fucoidan has been shown to enhance production of the antiaging HGF (Hepatocyte Growth Factor) cytokine.

Glyconutrients are already a proven in science. Pharmaceutical companies are spending miollions to synthetically manufature glyconutrients

Antioxidant Glutathione for Good Vision

Taken from "The Antioxidant Miracle" by Lester Packer, PH.D.

Glutathione was discovered well over a hundred years ago, but it has been only in the past decades that scientists began to understand the crucial role it plays in health. Since high quantities of glutathione are found in the lens of the eye, the early research focused primarilhy on vision. Although glutathione may be critical for good vision, as are other antioxidants, we now know that it performs so many vital roles in the body that it has been dubbed "nature's master antioxidant" by my friend and colleague the late Alton Meister, a well-known authority on glutathione.

Produced in the body, gluytathione is the primary water-soluble antioxidant. In the antioxidant network, glutathione recycles the oxidizaed form of vitamin C, restoring its antioxidant power.

Glutathione is certtainly one of the network's busiest antioxidants. It performs may jobs far and above its role as traditional antioxidants.

Oil Industry and Cancer

Complementary Cancer TherapiesBy Dr. Steve Nugent - President of International Association of Complementary Medicine

As I have stated in my first physicians desk reference (Nugent's Physicians Desk Reference for Applied Clinical Nutrition), "I believe there is an answer for all disease that can be found in nature. It is our mission therefore to work tirelessly until we find all of those answers.
For now however, many answers must still be found through synthetics or surgeries. Eventually with the unprecedented speed at which research is progressing in the areas of phytonutrients and glyconutrients, drugs will be replaced and all doctors who wish to stay in practice will have to learn these new areas of science and patient care. In the meantime however, we need to work together. More than 45% of the U.S. population uses vitamins now. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 35% of doctors who treat cancer are using some type of alternative therapy as an adjunct to chemotherapy or radiation.
Scientific peer reviewed studies proving the safety and efficacy of natural substances for many areas including cancer have been available for more than 26 years! No medical schools teach that information. Almost no doctors know about the information. This is appalling in the age of communication!

Keep in mind my friends; the second largest money making industry in the world is the cancer industry. That's right, second only to the Oil industry. Cancer is the most serious problem on this planet today! Why isn't the word getting out? Could this be due to scientific myopia? Are the professors and researchers simply unwilling to consider new ideas? Is there a conspiracy to insure that the cancer industry continues to grow and profit? Well, I don't have the answers to these questions and I choose not to speculate on them.

Study of Stress Affecting Health

Findings From the Studies
· Periods of short-term stress triggered the immune system to prepare for injury or infection, similar to a "flight or fright" response
· Long-term stress caused excessive wear on the body and activated a deterioration of the immune system
· The immune systems of the elderly and those already suffering with some kind of illness were less capable of coping with stressful situations
Examples of the Five Stressors Used in the Studies
· Acute time-limited stressors: Stress such as that brought on from speaking in front of large groups of people
· Brief naturalistic stressors: Challenges that occur throughout certain points in a person's life such as taking school exams
· Stressful event sequences: A specific life-changing event such as loss of a loved one in which the stress will eventually subside
· Chronic stressors: Stress induced by an extreme change in lifestyle such as becoming a caregiver for a chronically ill person or becoming permanently disabled from an accident in which there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel
· Distant Stressors: Stress that is the result of a traumatic event from the past that continues to wreak havoc on the immune system such as child abuse or post-traumatic stress experienced by war veterans
Researchers concluded that the stressors that most negatively compromised the immune system were the chronic stressors. Researchers also discovered the longer the duration of stress or perceived length of the stress, the less the body's ability to adapt to the stressful situation. It was determined this kind of stress could lead to serious negative health repercussions beginning with attacking the immune system at the cellular level then going after the overall broader functions of the immune system.

Sugar that Makes Things Tick

From New Scientist Vol 176 - 2002

The complex sugar molecules that help make living things tick are all built up from simple sugars, or "monosaccharides" such as glucose, and about 10 others. Two ring-shaped monosaccharide molecules can link together to form a disaccharide, the other main building block of complex sugars. Things are made more complex because there are several different ways for the monosaccharides to link together, which leave the two units angled in different directions.
The problem only gets worse as monosaccharide and disaccharide units link together to form polysaccharides, the chains of sugars which in turn form the giant structures of complex sugars. These massive molecules, which can contain more than 200 units, not only come as long chains, but also as intricately branched structures that decorate the surfaces of cells like a forest of sugary filigree. It's the three-dimensional shape of these sugars that is key to their functions, such as cell recognition. And there's a further complication: different atoms or groups of atoms may be attached to the basic monosaccharide molecules, subtly changing their properties.
All of this adds up to a massive headache for scientists trying to understand the structures and functions of complex sugars. Do the maths and even a mere six-unit sugar of a kind called a glycosaminoglycan has a staggering 12 billion possible versions. Researchers still have no idea how many of all the possibilities are actually exploited by nature, says Ram Sasisekharan, a bioengineer who leads a multidisciplinary team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We're still scratching the surface in figuring out which sugars are biologically relevant," he notes.

Glycemic Index and Heart Disease

From Science News
The New GI Tracks.(glycemic index and heart disease)
Author/s: Janet Raloff Issue: April 8, 2000

For preventing heart disease, diets that control insulin are all the buzz.

Two new tomes offering ways to diminish health complications of insulin resistance share the same title--Syndrome X--the medical name for a constellation of abnormalities that often develop in insulin-resistant individuals (SN: 9/16/89, p. 184). These include increases in blood pressure (SN: 10/14/89, p. 254), the length of time fats circulate in the blood, and the share of cholesterol residing in especially small, low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), which pose a potent heart-attack risk (SN: 9/21/96, p. 182). Syndrome X differs from diabetes in that the body can still produce enough insulin to cope with its elevated blood sugar.

Both books move away from the low-fat mantra that has pervaded major health guidelines for the general population during the past decade and campaign instead for limits on carbohydrates--sugary and starchy fare. The approaches to managing carbs, however, differ dramatically, reflecting a sharp dichotomy in the research community. One of the Syndrome X books, by Jack Challem (2000, John Wiley & Sons), recommends that people with this problem select fare with a low glycemic index (GI). In these foods, carbohydrates break down slowly in the digestive system to provide the blood glucose that powers cells. Challem and his coauthors reason that this sluggish digestion will keep blood-glucose concentrations fairly low, enabling the body to metabolize this sugar via a stable, moderate production of insulin. In the other new book with the same title (2000, Simon & Schuster), Stanford Medical School endocrinologist Gerald Reaven--who first defined syndrome X in 1988--asserts that the easiest way to maintain steady, moderate insulin concentrations is to keep body weight low, avoid bingeing on food, and steer clear of low-fat diets while limiting saturated fats. Indeed, he told SCIENCE NEWS, "the last thing I'd worry about is glycemic index."

Yet the term glycemic index is entering the public lexicon, not to mention medical symposia, health guidelines, and nutritional prescriptions. Fueling this interest is a rapidly growing body of research reporting tantalizing prospects for diets guided by the rate at which their carbohydrates are digested. Some researchers suggest that such diets can also foster weight loss (see sidebar) and perhaps even slow or prevent the development of type II diabetes. Although the authors of these studies are quick to acknowledge limitations in their data--often owing to small test groups or short trials of diets--many are enthusiastic about the potential health payoff from managing insulin via the diet, especially in people with no apparent risk factors for diabetes.

Dietary Intevention in Diabetes

INTRODUCTION
Dietary intervention has been regarded to be the safest, most economical and best suited life-long intervention for diabetes. Recently, Katani¹ stated that the intracellular, synthesized antioxidant systems comprised of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase provide far more protection to cells than pre-formed vitamin and micronutrient dietary antioxidants. The greatest damage from reactive oxygen species and free radicals is to phospholipids and fatty acids in functional cell membranes.
Medial thickening of arterioles has long been recognized as the hallmark of the microvascular disease associated with diabetes mellitus. Deposits of glycoproteins and glycolipids as seen in early stages of atherosclerosis and accelerated large vessel disease are found in diabetics. More recently the role played by peroxidation of plasma lipids as a contributing pathogenic factor in accelerated atherosclerosis of the diabetic state has been recognized.
Reduced serum antioxidant levels have been documented as contributing to the increased oxidative stress in Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM). Antioxidant deficiencies have been shown to be present at diagnosis of Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)/Insulin Resistance (IR) and Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM).
Antioxidant dietary therapy might retard or prevent progression from IGT/IR to NIDDM and decrease the severity of IDDM and diabetic complications by increasing the antioxidant levels of the body's defences against the increased oxidative stress associated with diabetes.
Hyperglycaemia associated with diabetes has been shown to stress the cellular microenvironment and disrupt cell membrane function. Prolonged hyperglycaemia has been shown to reduce the endogenous intracellular antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase catalase, and superoxide dismutase . Free radicals, formed by the auto-oxidation of glucose and glycosylated proteins, initiate reduction-oxidation reactions and promote oxidative stress which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetes. The degree of oxidation present in chronic diabetics directly parallels the severity of diabetic complications. Free radicals oxidize proteins causing interference with sodium, potassium, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) ion channels and failure of membrane cell receptors. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) undergoes single and double strand breaks as free radicals attach to phosphate groups, destroying deoxyribose sugars and bases. Excessive oxidation is implicated in mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, diabetes, many other disease processes and possibly aging as it plays a role in tissue degeneration and cell death. The human body has multiple natural antioxidants to manage the ongoing oxidative onslaught. The natural enzyme glutathione peroxidase is regarded as the most important natural enzyme antioxidant in IGT/IR and NIDDM. Persons with IGT/IR are known to have a glutathione deficiency of 15% while NIDDM diabetics have a 20% glutathione deficiency. Glutathione peroxidase activity is enhanced by selenium, but consumes nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) in the energy of regeneration of the natural enzyme. In diabetes NADPH is consumed by the competing reduction of glucose to sorbitol in insulin-independent tissues under high glucose conditions. NADPH is also consumed in converting glucose to other monosaccharides.
Glyconutrients are beneficial to wellness in humans.
